More Than a March: Documenting the Hīkoi Whakaara
At Nexus Point Pictures, we believe the most powerful stories are those that demand to be heard. We recently had the privilege of documenting the Hīkoi Whakaara, a 90km journey from Ashburton to Christchurch. This was more than a demonstration; it was a grassroots movement designed to force political and social attention onto the housing and poverty crisis gripping the Canterbury region.
As impact storytellers, our goal was to frame this journey as a moving testament to the lived reality of displacement.
Humanising the Crisis
The power of film lies in its ability to shift public perception. Throughout the march, our storytelling strategy focused on broadening the narrative. We worked to move the public conversation beyond the stereotype of "rough sleepers" to reveal the wider, often invisible crisis: families living in cars, overcrowded motels, and transitional housing.
By capturing the raw, rain-soaked reality of the 90km trek alongside intimate, documentary-style interviews, we helped humanise the statistics. We didn't just film the hikers; we filmed the urgency of their message.
Impact Beyond the Screen
The Hīkoi Whakaara proved that storytelling can lead to tangible social change. The public support galvanised by the march and its documentation provided the necessary momentum to accelerate the Housing First initiative in Christchurch.
Housing First represents a fundamental shift in social services—housing the most vulnerable members of our community immediately and providing wraparound support once they are safe and off the streets.
The Power of Advocacy Film
At Nexus Point Pictures, we don't just capture events; we capture the spirit of change. We are proud that our involvement helped bridge the gap between institutional goals and the urgent needs of the community. This project serves as a blueprint for how high-impact storytelling can serve as a catalyst for political and social action.
