Capturing the Road to Space: Rocket Lab’s Infrastructure Journey
At Nexus Point Pictures, we thrive on the challenge of capturing large-scale industrial feats. When Rocket Lab prepared to move a massive piece of infrastructure—a critical component for their launch operations—from their Auckland fabrication facility to the remote Mahia Peninsula, they needed more than just a recording. They needed a narrative that would resonate with stakeholders and global investors.
This wasn't just a logistics exercise; it was a physical manifestation of progress. Our mission was to capture the 500km journey of an oversized convoy as it navigated the winding arteries of New Zealand’s North Island to its final destination.
A Multi-Layered Production Strategy
To tell a story of this scale, our production team deployed a three-tiered approach:
1. The Pulse: Time-lapse Rigging To convey the sheer scale and persistence of the move, we deployed an array of GoPro cameras across the convoy vehicles. By capturing continuous time-lapse footage, we were able to condense 24-hours of precision driving and installation into a high-energy 90-second sequence that showcases the project's constant momentum.
2. The Perspective: Cinematic Ground Crew While the GoPros captured the movement, our ground crews captured the "soul" of the journey. We intercepted the convoy at key geographical milestones—from the industrial hubs of Auckland to the rugged, rural landscapes of the East Coast. The contrast between cutting-edge aerospace technology and the raw New Zealand wilderness provided a stunning visual metaphor for the "new frontier" of space.
3. The Narrative: Documentary-Style Interviews. A story is only as strong as the people behind it. We integrated documentary-style interviews with key personnel, allowing the experts behind the mission to explain the significance of this infrastructure. This human element was vital for US-based funders, providing a clear window into the operational excellence and dedication of the team on the ground.
Building Investor Confidence
The resulting film served as a pivotal tool for Rocket Lab, shared with key stakeholders to bolster investor confidence during a critical growth phase. By showcasing the successful delivery and commissioning of this infrastructure, Nexus Point Pictures helped bridge the gap between New Zealand operations and global funders.
